Legacy

Familiarity had two sons,
Complacency and contempt.
And all the time they’d argue,
Rarely a moment exempt.
Between these two generations,
A timebound same ole’ story;
A Cane and Able 2.0,
Yet with both now bound for glory.
One would say “you’re critical”,
The other “it’s a critical view”.
One says “you’re judgmental”,
The other “His judgement true”.
One boasts “how far we’ve come”,
The other “much more left to do”.
One “hold on to what we have”,
The other “another day to pursue”.
One says “When I was your age,
I was confident I knew the truth”.
The other “As you’ve shared before,
But please don’t despise my youth”.
So just as a coin, flicked in air,
Has two sides that hit the sun.
Just as a page within the book,
Gets turned when one is done.
It’s not about your point of view.
It’s not a battle between the two.
It’s not a replay, Cain, Abel slew.
And it’s not a revolution or a coup.
You see, there is, no more need,
No spiritual giants we have to make.
Not a competition or sacrifice,
Requiring one generation forsake!
Is it really that difficult to see,
Return on your investment made?
Why are you now utterly shocked,
Us building on the foundation you laid?
And is it really difficult to see,
Or unnatural to progress farther?
Has always your inevitable hope,
Become what makes me a martyr?
The question now in actuality is,
Can you willingly pass the crown?
Can you like Jacob, not Isaac dim,
With insight, bless instead of frown?
