Monopoly

Make no mistake, we are living inside of a board game! And yes, while The Game of Life, Risk, Trump: The Game, and now even Pandemic all are contenders for the high honor of faithful representativeness; none “fit the bill” more, in my opinion, than Monopoly.

Our lives are continuing to move around a flat, square…errr…I mean globe board where everyone is now fighting over our community chest and just praying for a chance to not run into all of the normal payments and taxes, we all land on. And don’t even get me started on jail! You know you are late in the game when people are actually wanting to go to jail simply so they can eat versus those with the right cards can get out of jail free.

However, the true reality is seen by those super rich players, who in coordination with the bank, allow all of the other players to go into debt. What was once a simplistic equation of cash flow quickly becomes a complex system of picking winners and losers, breaking the rules of the game and instantly creating a level of inequality where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. This dynamic and unsustainable event forces the creation of digitally recorded money because everything in the bank isn’t enough to cover the coordinated debt derivatives. The cannon owes the top hat four free lands of his choosing, whose already got his foot on the shoe for a thousand bucks, ten go-money passes or the free parking winnings (or whichever comes first).

These small tweaks and additions to the rules create the small fissures that lead to large and unintended consequences. So, instead of sore feelings because of healthy competition you have someone who comes in and overturns the whole board in revolution…Oh…wait…that’s what they’re aiming for…I see you rich Uncle Sam…err…I mean Pennybags!
